History of the art: Painted
circa 1928, while working at Ziggfield Follies, New Amsterdam
Theater in New York. Triumphant, joyous and romantic; Vargas, a
young man is confidant, in love with his soon to be bride and
missing his homeland of Peru. He paints a typical “jazz age”
nude in a merge of Art deco and Art Nuevo styles to express both his
adoration of the female nude, and the bittersweet elements of his
life as he had been away from his homeland for over 14 years.
In the background is a starry night, cliffs, and mountain
sides, and barley visible are the rooftops and chimneys of little
adobe homes... Not at all the hustle and bustle of New York City in
the roaring 20’s.
Alberto Vargas returns home in 1931 for about
6 months and has an art show there, this painting was left there and
remained there in Peru until found, brought back to the states,
restored and recreated in this the rarest of all limited editions
with a world exclusive agreement between The Vargas estate and
Vanguard Gallery.
